Sea Creatures 寿山石

A magnificent vintage 1960s finely carved stone 寿山石 depicting a variety of creatures in a seascape. Coral and seagrasses at the top left hand side , curling waves to the right with 2 sea bream visible, under which are two large prawns .Beneath are 2 large mud crabs, claws and legs extended as they crawl above a large woven fishing basket, around which are curling frothing waves. A large lily pad to the left, a fish surrounded by sea spray and rocks at the right.

The natural colour of the stone complements the carving and all the different creatures .
The detail in the carving is absolutely stunning. The large prawns so detailed and totally lifelike, as are the large mud crabs who look as though they may come to life at any minute, one can literally feel the strength that is in their powerful claws.
The woven bamboo fishing basket with its superb craftsmanship , the stone carved exactly as a real fishing basket, with its over and under weaving and the close knit weaving of the cane around the neck.
