Kirin with carapace

ANTIQUE JAPANESE NETSUKE

A superb ivory netsuke of a Kirin head turned to the rear, seated on a plinth front legs standing straight. On top of the head a carapace, the back with scales over which flows a bushy mane. Flames at the top of the front legs.
Fine detailed carving.

I have only seen 2 extremely similar to this netsuke. M T Hindson Page 326 #996 where it is described as being a Kirin.
an addendum states it as, one of the varieties of Kirin illustrated in the Soken Kisho.

Another example at auction Bonhams & Butterfileds 13 may 2003, Lot 5015 where it is just described as being a mythical animal comprising of parts of other mythical animals. (which is what a Kirin is)
