Netsuke Wood Japanese

Japanese antique boxwood netsuke

All the netsuke were purchased in Japan 40 to 50 years ago from dealers / auctions / collectors/ antique shops / antique markets

The translation of the Japanese characters to English is just that. Many Japanese netsuke were signed with the signatures of the great masters but they were not actual of them.
The major auction houses when describing a netsuke where this occurs, will state either of the following.
"Bearing the signature of....."
"The school of ................"
"In the style of .........."
That is to say that although their netsuke may bear the signature of Tomotada, it does not mean it is an actual Tomotada.
The above applies to some of the netsuke in my collection.

Since acquiring my collections, some up to 50 years ago, I have spent many hours initially checking books , auctions, and then the internet, in an effort to find similar to what I own for my own reference and edification.
Where applicable, I have noted on each listing, similar examples that I have seen / found in my research.

The image size of each netsuke is larger than actual, enabling one to see every tiny detail magnified.
