This set was made by Lacquer Master and Wood Turning Artist Tada Keikan of Yamanaka, son of Tada Sokan.
He is the Sixth Generation of Lacquer Masters in the Yamanaka tradition since the beginning of the Meiji period.
Succeeded now by his son Tada Tomohiro - the Seventh Generation.

The works of the Tada family have been exhibited at Keio Department Store Shinjuku Tokyo (High class department store of a similar standard to Harrods London.) for over 40 years as well as special events around Japan.

The origin of Yamanaka lacquer ware can be traced to the late 16th century. The 8th year of Tensho (1580年). A wood turner who moved to Manago Village (present-day Yamanaka-Onsen) brought woodturning techniques to the area.
Some Manago villagers moved to Yamanaka to make their living by selling wooden products to hot-spring visitors. At first, these products were made of white wood with no lacquer.

In the mid 18th century, famous master craftsmen were invited from all over Japan to introduce various techniques. Wood turning skill is the most distinctive feature of Yamanaka lacquer ware.
