A magnificent Aizu lacquer book box, portraying the Japanese love of wild grasses normally associated with Autumn.
Fine maki e painting . The inside of the box burnished gold lacquer.
Signed on the cover Sana Ko (artist name) with red kao seal mark.
This box is the work of the Echizen Lacquer Master Matsuda Sanao. Refer below.

Echizen Nuri
松田 眞扶 まつだ さなを Matsuda Sanao
Matsuda Sanao is the leading Makie Artist of Echizen –Nuri.
He was born on the 6th of February in the 9th year of Showa (1934).
He learned the art of Urushi lacquer from his father who learned the art of Urushi at Zohiko (象彦)the famous urushi lacquer ware maker in Kyoto in the 23rd year of Showa (1948).
In the 54th year of Showa (1979), he was certified as ‘Traditional Urushi Craftsman’.
His excellent work was demonstrated for the Prince and Princess in the 55th year of Showa (1980).
He became the judge of the Fukui Prefectural Art Exhibition and Special Councils Board Director in Fukui Prefecture in the 57th year of Showa (1982).
He won the Echizen Lacquer Ware Exhibition 17 times and was awarded the Governor Award 7 times.
At the Fukui Prefectural Art Exhibition he won 5 times and was awarded the Governor Award 5 times,
He exhibited at the Emperor and the Empress Art Exhibition and awarded a letter of appreciation.
He won the National Exhibition Lacquer Ware 10 times and was awarded the Secretary of the Forestry Agency Prize 3 times.
In the 14th year of Heisei (2002) he won the Minister of Agriculture Forestry Fisheries award at the National Lacquer Ware Exhibition.
He was awarded the title “ Modern Master Craftsman” by the Ministry of Health Labour and Welfare in the 22nd year of Heisei 2008.

Made using only the best woods such as, Zelkova (keyaki), Japanese Chestnut, Japanese Cypress, Magnolia, Cherry.
It takes approximately 6 months and 23 different processes from start to finish to produce each individual Handmade Item
