Sennin on Ox

A magnificent antique Japanese Meiji Period copper bronze lost wax casting of a Sennin on an Ox.

Made by the famous Meiji era artist Nobuo Tsuda (Artist pen name Taiju), known for his modern style in the metal casting world, passed away on February 17th 1946 at his home in Yanaka. He was 71 years old.

Born on October 23rd, 1875 in Sakura, Chiba Prefecture, he graduated from the metal casting department of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts in July 1900, was employed by the school in April 1901, and promoted to assistant professor in March of the following year.
He was promoted to professor in 1919, and in January 1919 he was ordered by the Ministry of Education to study abroad, leaving Japan in December 1919. In 1927, he became a committee member of the crafts department at the Teiten Exhibition, and served as a judge several times thereafter.

He was made a member of the Imperial Academy of Fine Arts in July 1935, and a member of the Art Academy in 1937. During this time, he was awarded the Officier d'Academy medal by France in 1928, and the Officier et al. medal in 1933.

He also became a professor at the Crafts and Technology Training Institute in June 1941, and retired in June 1944. He was promoted to the fourth rank and fourth class of the Order of the Sacred Treasure.

His representative works include the lion's head cast decoration for the upper part of the Nihonbashi Bridge, which he made in 1910, and the decoration for the door of the VIP room of the Diet Building, which he made in 1930. His works that have been exhibited include "Evening Darkness" (Imperial 8), "Lies of Tears" (Imperial 9), "Radiator Decoration" (Imperial 10), "Cast Copper Waves Shocking the Sky" (Shinbun 2), "Cast Copper Leap" (Ho), and "Bronze All Things Begin" (Shinbun 5).
