JAPANESE 1950

MAGNIFICENT DRAGON & ONI CENSER - "THE ORIGINAL REMAKE"

A superb copper bronze censer of impressive proportions cast using the lost wax process.
An outstanding Meiji Period " exact remake of the 1880 original."

A kneeling Oni clothed with an apron around his waist, a cover tied around his neck decorated with dragons, draping his shoulder. His mouth agape as he strains to hold a large censer bowl above his head.
The censer with a pierced cover of clouds , supporting a dragon curling around the central finial.
The bowl with inverted patterned U shaped handles a collar of keylock design, above a necklace of facing dragons.
Extended lappets around the central section.
The lower section a circular tray carrying five post tops, the same as Nihonbashi Bridge, affixed to the stand under.
Patterned firstly with a row of keylock design, above a row of scrolling curlicues, then tessellated octagonals, a border hemming the five feet.

Condition: Over 70 years old. Excellent. No damage. No repairs.

This censer is an Exact remake of the Original 1880 Meiji Period Masterpiece, it was made in 1950.
It was advertised for sale in the 1970's, refer image this listing Yen 900,000 the conversion rate at the time equalling A$12,000.
This outstanding design has been copied over the years in China.
The multitude of copies produced being extremely poor low quality imitations of the original.
They are smaller, inferior castings, lacking fine details and quality.
None, can come close to matching the quality, the size , the weight, of this Impressive Japanese Original.
