In Japanese tradition the Crane is said to live 1000 years, while the Turtle is considered to have a lifespan of ten thousand years.
Japanese refer to the crane as the “bird of happiness”. The wings of the crane were believed to carry souls up to paradise.
Japanese mothers pray for the protection of the crane’s wings for their children, the prayer: “O flock of heavenly cranes, cover my child with your wings.”
The Turtle is a symbol for wisdom, luck, protection, and longevity; longevity due to their long lifespan and slow movements.
The turtle is magic and unites heaven and earth, with its shell representing heaven and its square underside representing earth.
