Chagama Censer

Japanese early 20th century, Meiji period (1868-1912) to Taisho period (1912-1926)

Antique copper bronze censer

A truly Magnificent Extremely Rare "Chagama" censer. (Chagama 茶釜, "tea kettle is a Japanese term referring to the metal pot or kettle used in the Japanese tea ceremony).

This marvellous Chagama censer, a portrayal of what is used in the tea ceremony.
The lower section being the brazier, looped handles on either side, standing on three legs, where the charcoal is placed to heat the water which is contained in the kettle also having looped handles above.
The brazier with cranes cast in high relief in colours of gold and silver gilding set amongst flowering chrysanthemum (kiku) flowers and blooms.
The kettle a multitude of chrysanthemum blossoms, buds, leafage, cranes flying, a speckled background.
The cover a young boy proffering a small tray that holds a gold lidded tea cup used in the tea ceremony, sitting beside chrysanthemum flowers, a branching leaf and leaf cut out.

This is an absolute Meiji - Taisho Masterpiece, the outstanding design, the fine details, the high and low relief effects are superb and beyond compare.

This stunning large censer cast using the lost wax method.
