Travelling Seller
A magnificent Japanese fine ivory carving of an Edo Period travelling seller standing on a circular plinth.
Head partially shaved, hair tied in Chonmage. Dressed in 3/4 quarter kimono bearing stylised poplar leaf designs, a sleeveless haori and chequered patterned leggings, his feet clad in traditional split toe socks and straw sandals.
A sturdy bamboo pole on his right shoulder from which hangs an assorted multitude of his wares. Woven cane baskets, trays, and sifters of many different designs. A drum, a gourd, Daruma doll head, fan, broom, a large dice and more.
Superbly carved with much attention paid to the fine details.
