The Seller
A superb Extremely Rare polychromatic ivory figurine of a fruit seller.
The figure with a tied patterned turban on his head, a bushy beard, thick locks of hair. Dressed in a flowing decorated robe.
Carrying three woven baskets of fruit, a large one on his back, smaller on his left side, slightly bigger in front.
His left hand holding a set of scales, fruit on one side weights on the other. His right holding a fruit.
Two children at his side, the girl on the left her right hand raised as though beckoning buyers to come, the boy on his right carrying a small basket of fruit on his head, another in his left hand. The foot with curtains interspersed with splayed tassels around.
The carving is excellent as are the details.
When purchased the auction house described it as being Chinese carved, likely for a Persian or North Indian buyer. Based on the figurine itself, the motif decoration on the robes. The hanging curtains with splayed tassels around the foot appear to be Mughal influenced.
I have not been able to locate another ivory figurine like this, or similar, on the net, auction houses, books etc.
Based on my research I believe this carving is quite possibly " unique"
** If anyone looking at this can enlighten me more on the subject, I would love to hear from them.**
