Jurojin
A magnificent Japanese large ivory carving of Jurojin 寿老人, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan, he is the God of Wisdom.
Jurōjin is also a personification of the southern polar star, Nankyokusei 南極星. He is depicted in legends as a great lover of wine and fond of female company. Commonly shown as an old man with a long white beard carrying a knobbly staff with a scroll tied to it, on which is written the life span of all living things
Carved in the round from a large heavy piece of ivory that would have been located close to the middle of the tusk. His right arm tucking his knobbly staff, a gourd filled with wine tied to it, his hand holding a fan. The left an open scroll portraying a Daruma doll.
The inscription reading “Nanakorobi yaoki” a Japanese proverb meaning “Fall down seven times but get up eight” .
It encapsulates the Japanese ideal of never giving up, no matter how many times one has been knocked down.
