Large Tripod Censer


IVORY TRIPOD CENSER

A magnificent impressive antique Chinese ivory censer of oval cylindrical form, carved in high and low relief.
The cover surmounted with two adult Shishi and a single offspring. All holding a sash in their mouths a ball under the younger.
Standing on a platform bordered with keylock design.
The reticulated body, four Taotie heads each holding a ring, standing on a crenulated platform with a ringed keylock design. Underneath a Qianlong Period mark inscribed in a double square.
The body around the neck is keylock above a lappet necklace. Scalloped reserves. A dragon is centred with a dragon on either side at the front. The reverse carved with opposing double dragons Arched handles on opposite sides, intaglio carved with scrolling, carrying double rings. The body displaying Taotie masks above long legs supported on dragon clawed feet.
Underneath a Qianlong Period mark inscribed in a double square.

This large ivory censer weighing 1.936 kgs is exquisitely carved and extremely attractive. The ivory has aged to an appealing warm creamy mellow colour with a superb patina. Dates to the late Qing Dynasty - early Republic period
