Dragon Jar
A magnificent carved double overlay antique glass jar, Qing Dynasty of the finest quality.
A SUPERB IMPERIAL STYLE BEIJING DRAGON JAR.
Deep Emerald Green overlaid on dark Cherry Red all set on a Milk White base.
On opposite sides, two five clawed dragons carved in high and low relief, each holding the jewelled pearl, surrounded by flaming tendrils, and stylised cloud formations, above curling, foaming, wave formations.
The Emerald Green overlay on Cherry Red, giving the Dragons the appearance, of being Black in colour. When the light is caught on the angles of the glass the refracted light producing Emerald Green glints, the visual aspect being:
* JEWELLED DRAGONS *
The foot with a well carved Qianlong Period mark1736 to 1795 .
The quality of this bowl is evidenced by the the milk white base which has a depth of 13mm (1.3 cm ).
The depth of the double overlay glass 10 mm (1 cm).
The double overlay would originally have completely covered the whole of the bowl, carved through the layers, removing excess glass to produce this Masterpiece.
Formerly the property of a Japanese collector.
A similar Dragon Jar of single red overlay was sold in the JINGGUANTANG COLLECTION - Hong Kong 3rd November 1996. Lot 507.
Note: the actual colour of the red overlay is a DARKER cherry red than the images.
