PHOENIX CHILONG VASE

A superb hand carved Beijing Glass vase of elegant form, an elongated cylindrical neck above a spherical body.

Cherry red overlay on a milk white base, with flanking panels following the shape of the vase, reaching to the neck.
Finely carved within panels scrolling leafy foliage, peony flowers, phoenix and rockery. The panels separated by a writhing chilong (young dragon).

Hand carved four character Qianlong mark set within a square border under the base.

Late Qing Dynasty early Republic period

NOTE: Have only ever seen one other example of a Beijing Glass vase that bears any similarity in subject carving and colour.

Described as being 18th century Qianlong, provenance ex Newton Johnson collection.
