PAIR RED CINNABAR LACQUER VASES

A excellent pair of large vintage Red / Cinnabar lacquer vases that date to 1950 @ 74 years old.
The necks bearing curling tendrils with flowering leafy stems. The shoulders with scrolling tendrils, four half lotus blossoms visibly rising above two large panels on opposite sides, framed by etched leaves and curling tendrils. The panels separated by a design of leaf form and scrolling, centred with a large lotus flower.
Each panel portraying peony blooms, craggy rockery formations set against a diaper ground.
The foot carved with scrolling tendrils interspersed with four blossoms.
The interior and under the foot enamelled blue turquoise

Condition: Excellent
It takes approximately 17 coats of lacquer to produce a depth of 1mm of lacquer. The red /cinnabar colour in lacquer is derived from mercury sulfide a bright red colour which is used to dye the lacquer. Red / cinnabar lacquers (mercury sulfide) darkens over time with exposure to light.
