Chinese Enamel Falangcai 珐琅彩 Copper Box
QING PERIOD (1644 to 1911)
A superb three tiered box and cover masterpiece portraying children at play.
The box of rounded form, consisting of three trays, a lid cover.
Bordered with linked ruyi forms enclosing lotus flowers. Branching magnolia bearing a multitude of yellow blossoms, two gaily coloured long tailed flycatcher birds perched.
A butterfly. Rockery and grasses.
Four character calligraphy and red seal mark.
The calligraphy translates as " Birds Song and Flowers".
All set against a white aqua tinged ground.
The trays decorated with continuous scenes of children enjoying various pursuits against a backdrop of varying scenes.
A Magnificent example of Falangcai at its finest.
The individual details of the children's faces, their apparel delicately and exquisitely painted in an amazing, glorious display of colours, hues and tones, that totally enchant the eye of the beholder.
The base with a cobalt blue 4 character period mark.
This is of the same quality and high standard of Falangcai enamel produced in the Imperial Workshops of the Imperial Palace, 造 辦 處 Zaobanchu for the Imperial Court.
Formerly the property of a Japanese collector.
This is the only example of a tiered box with the subject of a "Hundred Boys" that I have seen.
