Bowl and cover

A superb antique large cloisonné lidded bowl, the style colour quality and weight date this to Early 20th century circa 1900 to 1925.

The body of the bowl and lid being of solid heavy brass. The cloisonné around the bowl and on the cover lid with red and white chrysanthemum blossoms and leafage.

An indication of good cloisonné is the actual weight of the item, the heavier it is the better quality it is. Cloisonne in the latter half of the 20th century did not use heavy brass or bronze, instead using a cheap metal that was dipped in a brass colour which usually rubs off after some years, those items are also much lighter.

The nearly black background enamel formulation used in the early half of the 20th when placed under a torch or spotlight, giving an appearance as though sparkling .
