THE THREE STAR GODS BRUSHPOT三星 SANXING "
QING PERIOD 1644 to 1911

The colour of this brushpot is : Tan Brown -Amber with darker accents, it appears much lighter in the images.

An outstanding auspicious brush pot standing on three feet, carved in high and low relief portraying The Sanxing 三星 against a background of growing bamboo, a low walled courtyard, an overhanging branching pine, a table bearing a scholars box and bowl, rocky outcrops.
The Sanxing 三星 are the Gods of the Three Stars or Constellations considered essential in Chinese Astrology and Mythology: Jupiter, Ursa Major, and Canopus. Dressed in flowing robes and displaying their attributes according to legend. Lao Sho, the legendary Star God of Happiness and Longevity standing on the right holding a staff in his left hand , his right holding the peach which blossoms every 3000 years, symbolising immortality.
Fu Shi in the middle the legendary Star God of Happiness and Wealth holding a symbol of wealth.
Lu Shin the legendary Star God of rank and affluence normally always depicted with a child.

A calligraphic inscription and a seal mark

Formerly the property of a Japanese collector, purchased over 42 years ago in Japan.
